1. Why marmosets?
Marmosets are NHPthat are similar with humans in terms of their physiology, anatomy, and drug metabolism. They have been used in life science research for decades, and their data has been accumulated in a variety of fields, including the brain, nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, and immune system and behavior.
A major advantage of using marmosets is their small size. They are about the same size as a rat, which means that they require less of the drug and other resources. This can save researchers cost and term.
CLEA Japan has been providing marmoset experimental animals in Japan since 1991. We have a long and a lot experiences and expertises in the care and breeding of marmosets, and we are committed to providing high-quality animals to our customers.
2. Why are we launching this service?
In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for small-scale, affordable, and easy-to-obtain marmoset pharmacokinetic data. This is based on the accumulated data that shows that marmosets are similar with humans in terms of their physiology, anatomy, and drug metabolism.
However, animal experiments using NHP can be expensive and time-consuming. They also require specialized facilities, equipment, and animal care and research technicians.
To meet these demands, we are launching a new service that provides marmoset pharmacokinetic data. This service will be handled by our experienced and qualified staffs, so researchers can focus on their experiments and data analysis.

Advantages of Small Molecule Drugs
- Blood-only samplings do not require the purchase of marmosets.
- We can provide treatment groups that distinguish between marmoset CYP2C19 EM/PM for metabolic enzyme genetic polymorphisms commonly observed in primates, including cynomolgus monkeys.
- We have test data for cocktail administration of multiple test drugs.
Advantages of Medium-sized Molecule Drugs
- We have no internal experience with the administration of nucleic acid drugs, but recent pharmacokinetic studies of Mipomersen, Inotersen, and Volanesorsen in marmosets (up to 91 days) have been reported in conferences and other publications. We are open to discussing nucleic acid drug administration trials upon request.
Advantages of Monoclonal Antibody Drugs in marmosets
- The required dose is about 1/10 of that of cynomolgus moneys.
- The possibility of human PK prediction has been suggested for monoclonal antibody drugs with linear PK. (Unpublished data: Partial disclosure is possible upon request.)
- A Microsoft Excel program for drawing predicted curves after bolus, infusion, and subcutaneous administration using a 4-parametric plot (two-compartment model) created by CLEA Japan Inc. is available. (An Excel copy is available upon request.)
- We also support research to expand the use of our products beyond human PK prediction.

FAQ
How much test material is required for marmosets?It depends on the injection site and the compound, but it is about 1/10 of the amount of cynomolgus monkeys.
Is it possible to execute by your own employees in our site to conduct research, like a rental lab?Please tell me the possible amount and number of blood samplings.
In the case of a body weight of 350g, it is possible to collect 2 to 2.5mL per week (with a rest period of more than 2 weeks) or 2.5 to 3mL in total (with a rest period of more than 4 weeks). Also, the maximum number of blood samplings is about 7 points per day, each 0.3mL (total 2.1mL).
How many animals can be used for the test in this service?Orders of n=3 or more are generally accepted. The animals will be secured immediately after your order, but the test start will take about two weeks as the experimental plan needs to be approved by our animal welfare committee.
