Introduction to High Fat Diet 32 (HFD32) for Mice and Rats: A High-Fat Diet for Diabetes and Obesity Researchs

Please consider using High Fat Diet 32 (HFD32) for your obesity research or other dietary induction studies.

Corresponding of complains about general high-fat diets for mice and rats is too low, CLEA Japan developed HFD32 in increasing fat from 20% to 32% with solid shape. Please consider using CLEA Japan’s HFD 32 for obesity research and other dietary induction studies.

History of development

Previously, high-fat diets for mice and rats were difficult to solidify when the amount of added fat exceeded 20% and were adjusted as powdered shape. In addition, even if a solid high-fat feed with an oil addition of 20% or less was available, it had to be imported from overseas manufacturers or adjusted by users.

Therefore, CLEA Japan undertook the task of solidifying high-fat feed, which had been difficult at that time. They succeeded in commercializing "High Fat Diet 32," a solid high-fat feed with a crude fat content of approximately 32%, which was the first domestic manufacturer to do it.

Characteristic

HFD32 is a super-high-fat diet with a crude fat content of 32% and a fat-derived calorie ratio of about 60% of total energy.

Previously, high-fat diets with the same level of fat content were only available in powdered shape. However, HFD32 is available in a more convenient pellet shape.

Since the accumulation of visceral fat is significantly observed, it is also effective for obesity research in addition to diabetes research.

Shape / Capacity

Volume: 3 kg (6 bags of 500 each)
Shape: Pellets (diameter 12.5 mm)
Packaging: Cardboard

The shape of High Fat Diet 32 is in the form of pellets

Notes:

Keep in a freezer

HFD32 is a very fragile diet at room temperature and does not maintain sufficient hardness. It is also prone to lipid oxidation.

HFD32 is delivered frozen at -20℃ immediately after manufacturing and transported in a frozen state. It should be kept in a freezer.

Feeding animals, the diet should be returned to room temperature for 1 hour when stored at -20℃ and 3 hours when stored at -80℃.

High Fat Diet 32 should be stored frozen

Diet replacement schedule

Please replace the HFD32 that has been fed within 2 days.

Reference data

  • Male mice of the C57BL/6JJcl and KK-Ay/TaJcl strains at 4 weeks of age are divided into two groups for each strain (HFD32 and CE-2 [normal diet]).
  • Free-choice diet is continued from 5 to 12 weeks of age.
  • Weight is measured weekly. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and dissection are performed at 12 weeks of age.
  • In the OGTT, glucose solution (2 g/kg body weight) is administered orally after 20 hours of fasting. Blood is collected from the tail vein at 0, 30, 60, and 120 minutes after administration to measure blood glucose levels.

In addition to feeding HFD32, we observed changes in mice after providing them with different methods of drinking sugar and fructose solutions.

We investigated the comparison of metabolic syndrome between morning and evening types in mice. By changing the light-dark cycle suitable for mice while feeding HFD32, we investigated the modulation of circadian rhythms.

FAQ:

How long does it take to deliver?

We have both RI30kGy irradiated and non-irradiated products in stock, and we can provide them just like general diet. Once we receive your order, we will ship them directly by cold courier (frozen).

Is it possible to mix drugs?

In principle, we can manufacture special feed by contract manufacturing. For details, please contact us through the inquiry form.

Can I purchase the powdered type?

In principle, yes, you can purchase the powdered type. However, please note that it may form clumps due to the high fat content, unlike ordinary powdered feed. We can ship it in an unformed state

Is high-pressure steam sterilization possible?

We do not recommend high-pressure steam sterilization because it can cause fat melting. We recommend purchasing RI30kGy irradiated products.

Is it okay to store at room temperature?

No, it is not okay to store at room temperature. The fat will melt, so please store in the freezer. We recommend storing below -4℃. Please warm it back to room temperature before feeding.

What is the unit of sale?

The unit of sale is a box of 3 kg (6 bags of 500 g each).

Do you have a control diet?

Yes, we have a control diet called LFD (low-fat feed). It is considered a special diet, so it will take about 1 to 1.5 months to deliver.
