What is the Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) animals?
SPF animal is an experimental animal which does not contain any specified pathogenic-microorganisms of decreasing experimental accuracy, reproductive efficiency, and biohazard safety for researchers. CLEA Japan executes the microorganism monitoring test as below to be enough its animal quality as the world-class SPF level.

Established Foundation Stock Department to keep animal quality over time
CLEA Japan keeps uniformity and reproducibility of the animals not only between facilities but also over time. Our Foundation Stock Department maintains foundation colonies to avoid quality change over time strictly by supplying animals to every production colonies of all facilities to uniform these phenotype and characteristic frequently (monthly). Because of this effort, CLEA Japan animals have a very high uniformed quality of their characteristics, genetics, and phenotypes all the time.
Small Independent Facility Method
CLEA Japan employs Small Independent Facility Method for animal breeding facilities and avoid closing many work traffic lines, one of the most possible causes of the infectious accident, as less as possible. It can make minimize the accident by breeding animals in one facility only with the same strain or microbiological level animals.
Stringent quality management
Apart from that, CLEA Japan uses other various unique know-hows to keep the animal quality strictly. For example, we employ very stringent SPF items so almost all of the experimental animal organizations, have SPF animal rooms, receive CLEA animals directly to their animal room. (Except the case the organization has unique local microorganism, which is not existed in Japan, or they have special microbiological requirements due to their experimental desire.)
In addition, CLEA Japan employs highest quality diet ingredient chose in nutrients and raw material quality points of view, various sterilization methods by considering effectiveness and safety balance, and special handling standards by each strain (for example, we use special tong for handling immunodeficiency animals, have a delicate skin). For delivery, we confirm body weight, various condition status, and phenotype of the animals and try to deliver them uniformity as much as possible.
Due to these efforts, CLEA Japan animals, have “Jcl” in their nomenclature, are showed in various academic meetings and papers included in Europe and America and are recognized their quality worldwide.

Han:WIST
CLEA Japan introduced Han:WIST（BrlHan:WIST @Jcl(GALAS)）, developed by CLEA, Taconic Farms Inc. (U.S), and Taconic Europe (Denmark) cooperation and mutual agreement, to Thailand as a outbred rat model. The animal has high survivability and suitable for long term researches such as carcinogenicity study. They are used for safety study mainly in Europe.

SDT rat
CLEA Japan introduced the spontaneously diabetic Torii (SDT) rat as a non-obese type 2 diabetes model in Thailand. With Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats background, this animal shows high water and diet intake with high urine volume and glucose level.
