Video Poster Series Archive: The SDT fatty rat Chronicles
Video Archive
Overview
This Video Poster Series is based on a scientific presentation/poster presented at ARVO 2018.
The presentation investigates whether the uni-nephrectomized SDT fatty rat, a model of advanced diabetic nephropathy, also develops features of diabetic retinopathy. Male SDT fatty rats underwent unilateral nephrectomy at 6 weeks of age and were maintained with 0.3% salt in drinking water for 10 weeks.
Electroretinography revealed retinal neurologic dysfunction from 12 weeks of age. At 17 weeks, the rats exhibited reactive retinal gliosis and vascular changes, including vessel dilatation and tortuosity, without evidence of increased retinal vascular permeability. These retinal abnormalities developed alongside advanced renal complications and a greater than 50% decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
This content provides an overview of the study background, experimental design, and principal findings for researchers interested in diabetic retinopathy, diabetic kidney disease, and the preclinical evaluation of multiple complications associated with type 2 diabetes.
