Origin

The spontaneously diabetic Torii (SDT) rat is a non-obese type 2 diabetes model established in 1997 by Dr. Masami Shinohara at the Research Laboratory, Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., who found male animals that showed polydipsia, polyphagia, polyuria, and glucosuria among Sprague-Dawley rats raised for a long period. This strain was introduced to our company from Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and we started its production and supply as SDT/Jcl in 2005.

Cautions for the Breeding and Experimentation of Diabetic Model Animals

  1. Acclimation: Please take 3-5 days of acclimation after transportation to avoid hypoglycemia caused by stress.
  2. Frequent Bedding Changes: Due to polyuria associated with diabetes, please increase the frequency and amount of bedding changes.
  3. Consistent Measurement: Blood glucose levels can fluctuate based on diet, measurement methods, and sample type (blood, serum, plasma). Please ensure consistent procedures.
