The GK (Goto-Kakizaki) rat strain was established by emeritus professor Yoshio Goto and Dr. Masaei Kakizaki of Tohoku University, who established the working hypothesis that non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is a polygenic disorder. They established this strain through repeated selection breeding of individual Jcl:Wistar rats with a decreased glucose tolerance, as evaluated using an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This strain was introduced from Tohoku University, and we started its production and supply as GK/Jcl.
GK rats are not obese, but they do have high blood glucose levels beginning at a younger stage. However, their blood glucose level remains at about 200 mg/dL after 4 weeks of age; therefore, these rats have mild hyperglycemia. The increase in blood glucose after glucose loading is high, suggesting a severe insulin secretion defect in response to glucose. At the same time, the plasma insulin level at satiation is rather high, showing slight insulin resistance. Pancreatic Langerhans hypoplasia and decreases in ? cells are already observed at the embryonal stage, and fibrosis progresses with age. Complications such as peripheral neuropathy and slight renal disorder can also be found.
